AM´s Plea to Secretary of State
Cynon Valley AM Christine Chapman has written to the Secretary of State for Wales, in support of the County and Magistrates´ Courts in Aberdare. (7th July 2010)
This follows the announcement by the UK Government of plans to hold a consultation which could see both facilities close. Referring to previous consultations carried out by the Ministry of Justice.
In her letter, Mrs Chapman wrote; “Surely it is iniquitous for the Ministry of Justice to ignore previous consultations that determined local justice is essential for the citizens of the Cynon Valley?”
The AM added : “I believe it is particularly unfair for the staff and local communities to be expected to undergo another period of uncertainty. The Government’s proposals show an ignorance of local geography and transport links. They also fail to consider local demand to access local justice, and the important principles of social justice that make this necessary”.

Notes to Editors
• Mrs Chapman wrote to the Welsh Secretary to highlight a previous consultation that took place during 2008/09 regarding the continued provision of a Unified Family Service at Aberdare Magistrates’ Court.
• Mrs Chapman also noted a consultation process that was carried out in 2009 regarding the provision of a staffed public counter service in Aberdare County Court.
• Both consultations recognised the importance of maintaining services in Aberdare.
