AM PRESSES FOR A465 ACTION

Christine Chapman AM has pressed the First Minister to take a fresh look at measures that can be taken to make the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road safer. The Cynon Valley AM referred to new statistics which had been obtained from the South Wales and Gwent Police Forces. (16th June)
Mrs Chapman welcomed the publication of recent statistics which showed that the number of casualties on Welsh roads was the lowest since records began. However, Mrs Chapman had obtained information from both the police forces that cover the Heads of the Valleys area, which recorded all accidents on the road over a ten year period from 2000 to 2009.

“The number of accidents resulting in casualties is quite startling. We need to take a fresh look at these statistics to see what can be done to make this road safer” said Mrs Chapman.

“Information from Gwent Police shows that there were 281 accidents involving casualties on the stretch of the A465 between Abergavenny and Dowlais Top, in which seven people were killed and 77 seriously injured.

“Information from South Wales Police reveals that on the A465 between Dowlais Top and Hirwaun, there were 304 collisions in which people were hurt. A total of 32 of these collisions involved serious injury, and 21 involved the loss of life” the AM added.

The First Minister replied “We are looking to dual the Heads of the Valleys road. When we are able to do that, it will undoubtedly reduce the number of casualties”.
